This painting tells a story about bush tomato’s that grow wild across central Australia. After a big rain the bush tomato plant grows green leaves and hard green fruit starts to grow. The sun warms the ground and the fruit turns yellow, then Aboriginal women and families go out into the bush to collect the fruits. This is a traditional food found on Country after the rains. If the fruit stays on the plant and dries in the hot sun it is still good to eat.
How to find bush food is passed down from mothers, aunties, and grandmothers to daughters and nieces. Aboriginal women know where the plants grow and through stories, time on Country, and shared experience, knowledge is handed down—one generation teaching the next.
