This painting shows the tall River Gum trees that grow along the Waite River, near my community. The river bed is wide and sandy, and water only flows for a short time, usually after heavy rain fall in the surrounding hills.
These trees are shown at sunset time, standing quietly along the dry river. Their bark is smooth and pale, and in the painting, you can see the small white dots that represent the sugar leaf. These leaves fall from the River Gums and are known for their sweet taste.
During the hot summer months in Central Australia, the trees give shade along the river bed. This is where local women gather, especially during dancing ceremonies. Under the cover of the gums, the women celebrate their culture.
