This is a painting about bush tomato’s that grow after the rain in the Central Desert area. When the tomato is yellow, like in the painting it is ready to eat. Sometimes the fruit dries in the sun and turns brown, this is still good to eat.
The curved shapes represent women sitting on the ground, they have a coolamon in front of them to put the fruit into. A coolamon is a carved wooden bowl used in the old days to carry food.
Aboriginal families living in Remote Central Australia go out and collect the fruit when it is ripe. The knowledge of what these plants look like and where to find them helps families stay strong and connected to their Country.
