This painting shows the ancient megafauna that once lived around the area we now call the Alcoota site in Central Australia. Around 9 million years ago, huge animals moved across this Country. One of them was Dromornis, a giant flightless bird. In the painting, you can see Dromornis walking through the landscape, close to the bush medicine plants that still grow here today.

Scientists visit Alcoota to dig carefully into the ground and uncover the bones of these ancient animals. Every year they find more fossils, but many still lie hidden beneath the surface, waiting to be discovered. The land holds these stories safely, keeping the memory of the megafauna alive.
