After big rain, the desert plants wake up and Aboriginal women from nearby communities know exactly when these healing leaves are ready. They go out onto Country to collect them, following knowledge passed down from mothers, aunties and grandmothers. The leaves are crushed, and sometimes boiled, to make a natural rub. This gentle medicine helps ease coughs, colds, aches, pains and skin irritations. Many families still use it today as part of everyday care.
Learning about bush medicine is an important part of culture. Elders teach the young ones how to find the right plant, how to pick it safely, and how to prepare it properly. This knowledge has been shared for thousands of years and continues to keep families strong, healthy and connected to Country.
