This painting by Maryanne is about bush tomato’s that grow wild across Central Australia.

After a big rain the plant grows small purple flowers and produces green fruit which slowly starts to turn yellow and ripen in the sun. The fruit can dry naturally on the plant also, it becomes brown and wrinkled but still good to eat, it has a sharp, tangy flavour when yellow and fresh and an earthy, slightly sweet flavour when dried.

Local Aboriginal women and families who live nearby in remote communities go out into the bush to collect the fruit.

Knowing how to identify the food and fruits is passed down from one generation to the next. It helps families stay connected to their country.
