This painting shows Dromornis, a giant flightless bird that lived on the land near my community of Engawala millions of years ago. This bird was much bigger than an emu and walked across the Country long before people were here.

Today, his old bones are found at the Alcoota fossil site. They were buried under the ground for a very long time. Scientists come to this place and carefully dig in the earth. They find the bones piece by piece and slowly put them together, like a puzzle. By doing this, they can learn what Dromornis looked like and how he lived on this land.

This painting reminds us that the Country holds many old stories. The bones of these ancient creatures are still there, waiting to be found and shared with the world.
