This painting tells the story of megafauna that were found at Alcoota, not far from my community of Engawala. These were giant animals that lived on this desert Country millions of years ago, long before people walked here.

Their old bones have been discovered deep in the ground. Some belong to huge creatures like giant birds, giant wombat type animals, and big crocodile like reptiles. These bones have been resting in the earth for a very long time, held safely by the land.

Scientists come to Alcoota to dig carefully in the soil. When they find bones, they clean them, study them, and put the pieces back together. This helps them understand what these ancient animals looked like and how they lived on this Country.

The painting shows how the land still carries old stories beneath the surface. Even today, more bones are waiting to be found, reminding us that this desert Country has a deep history that stretches far back in time.
